Turning grey into green – where biodiversity thrives
To support biodiversity and adapt to climate change on the company premises, the VOLKSWAGEN GROUP Original Teile Logistik, Vertrieb & Services GmbH (Vetriebszentrum Köln) unsealed parts of the parking area used by employees and visitors.

Description
The initial motivation for this step was the poor condition of our large–crowned oak trees. Due to insufficient water supply, the trees were at risk of dying. In total, 10 parking spaces were removed. Since there is on site sufficient parking capacity overall, there was broad consensus to proceed with unsealing this area to benefit the environment.
This transformation was carried out with high ecological standards in mind:
- A wooden border using tree trunks was created to define the new green space.
- A special tree substrate that retains water was used to improve conditions for the trees.
- The area was planted with a diverse selection of native, shade–tolerant species.
- Dead wood structures were added to further enhance habitat quality and biodiversity.

Effects
Improved rainwater infiltration reduces surface runoff and supports groundwater recharge.
Water–retaining substrate helps trees survive heat and drought stress.
Tree preservation contribute to urban cooling (heat island mitigation).
Biodiversity is enhanced through native planting and
dead wood structures.
Shade from healthy trees reduces heat stress for employees
Implementation tips
- Think social – support local: The project was implemented on–site by a local workshop for people with disabilities, and the plants were supplied by a local nursery.
- Communication to employees: Highlight the benefits for staff well–being: shade, a more natural environment, and improved microclimate and emphasize that no essential parking space is lost and the project supports the company’s sustainability goals.
"Transforming paved ground into living green spaces is more than a green investment – it´s commitment to climate resilience, biodiversity, and a healthier future for all."
