Greening buildings – GEFÄSSERIE

Green buildings – good for people and nature

Green-blue measures that have been implemented by the "GEFÄSSERIE" include a wall–bound façade greening on the office building (covering 100% of the wall) with water supply via a cistern. Further, there is an extensive roof greening of the office and adjoining building with rainwater retention of 20 litres/sqm.

Description

The green façade of the building with a diverse selection of native plant species is an – ecological and aesthetic – highlight for the GEFÄSSERIE headquarters.

Each of the four parts of the building is assigned to a cardinal direction – north, south, east or west – and planted with local, climatically adapted greenery. The fully planted façade has a positive effect on the microclimate, improves air quality and contributes to the sustainable design of the company site. The wall–mounted, modular greening system is irrigated via a rainwater cistern with a capacity of 30,000 litres. The rainwater collected on site supplies the plants with water in a way that conserves resources.

An extensive, low–maintenance green roof complements the greening concept. This roof was realised with a robust sedum and herb mixture and has a construction height of 15 cm. The modular system used also enables effective rainwater retention of up to 20 litres per square metre – a valuable contribution to rainwater management and climate adaptation in urban areas.

Implementation tips

  • Successful implementation as part of an integrative overall concept – including rainwater utilisation and an adapted planting strategy.
  • Close co–operation between planning, implementation and maintenance is essential for lasting functionality and impact.

"With our new company building and the decision in favour of outdoor greenery, we want to contribute to the positive development of the urban climate and have also thought about the people who work in our offices: We also want to offer them a pleasant indoor climate."
